DIE MADE IM SPECK: PERFORMANCE, SOUND INSTALLATION AND LECTURES (RUNNING UNTIL MAY 18TH)(Click on image to enlarge)
Die Made im Speck is an installation and performance project about the dimensions of social disgust. Disgust doesn't only relate to biological decomposition processes but also to social groups and behavior. In Pasolini's work disgust manifests itself as moral and sexual squalidness, which he associated with fascism. Sartre conceives disgust
rather as senselessness and randomness of existence. After all disgust is an important topic of groundbreaking philosophical reactions and concepts of the 20th century. The connection between the human‐existential and social disgust can be seen, for example, in the viewing "gures of TV‐Shows like Das Dschungelcamp on RTL ‐ the market share was at 40 percent, meaning 7.28 million viewers – in which celebrities of Germany eat maggots and get showered in cockroaches. Massmedia shows such as Gnadenlos (Sat.1) and Das Messie‐Team (RTL2), feign to be debates on a socially‐specified dimension. Yet they point their anger at distorted social images without, however, identifying and analyzing the underlying social pathologies. The insights of science are always lesser than the pool of man's experience. Every scientific interest in insight is always confronted with certain leftovers, realities that are methodically elusive. In so far as disgust is the eruption of the negative and the carnally‐unknown, science is constantly faced with its limitations. The present with its complexity of diverse indexes can only be captured, simulated and experienced by and through art. With die made im speck we attempt to collectively approach the dimensions of social disgust from different angles and to further deconstruct it. This deconstruction will touch on and confront us with our own boundaries in relation to our moral, our mentality and our patience. In this respect, the different artistic fields shall converge to a total work of art. Production time: Beginning of March until end of April 2012 Presentation: 15 – 18 Mai 2012 Installation: Shuah Brotherton www.shuah‐brotherton.de, Josefine Lindner Choreography: Miriam Welk www.miriamwelk.de Performance: Julia Metzger-Traber, Jara Serrano www.jaraserrano.com, Vasso Polymeni Music: Bia Paiva Costumes: Bergit Faßl Lectures: Harald Pittel, Feray Halil Throughout the month of May, Panke will be hosting a series of concerts, DJ sets, art exhibitions, weekly screenings and theatre performances with national and international artists. ANIMA/ANIMUS #1: SAVAGE AMUSEMENT - THE C WORD(Click on image to enlarge)
savage amusement (Melanie Jame Walsh – triage live art collective) explores ‘the C word’. Commitment. Commitment to performance. Commitment in performance. The commitment of the performance animal. Following a two month run of performances in Melbourne, Australia, the last being a 72 hour durational event, the artist will board a plane to Berlin. Following this 24 hour transit, she will come directly to the KuLe space from Tegel to collide jet-lagged and probably highly delirious to test ‘commitment’ by making a performance over 1.5 hours. As inspiration for this improvised work, audience members and interested parties are invited to send in objects to KuLe that will be waiting for savage amusement on her arrival. Check MPA-B, KuLe & savage amusement websites for more details.
This week-long curated programme of video, live art, dance and performance art invites artists to respond to the provocation, Anima/Animus; to play with the creature, the animal, the totem; the man, the woman, the archetype; the wild, the tamed, the extinct; the shadow, the subconscious, the silent. “…since each of us were several, we were already quite a crowd” – Gilles Deleuze.

BUCHVERNISSAGE PERFORMANCE CHRONIK BASEL 'FLOATING GAPS' UND PERFORMANCES VON STEFFI WEISMANN UND DOROTHEA RUST(Click on image to enlarge)
Performance Chronik Basel (1968–1986)
ABOUT GENERAL PUBLICGeneral Public is an independent project space run by a group of cultural workers (visual artists, curators, among others) based in Berlin. General Public was founded in Fall 2005 and since produced a number of exhibitions, artist presentations, discussions, film screenings, and performances. Additional to its own program General Public occasionally serves as a host for related external activities and projects.
General Public aims to install and uphold a collaborative, process-related, informal platform for open thought, information exchange, spatial experiments, transdisciplinary approach and the reflection on contemporary visual and auditive culture. Allthough operating within an international network, General Public's activities are always informed by and related to its local context and situation. Far from eyeing out individuals and the market's usual taxations, direct involvement in contemporary creation and discourse on the level of production – paradoxically – ensures critical distance to take positions within what is going on around us culturally and socially. The activities of General Public are structured into distinct series (DISK Sessions, Orginalfassung, Oscillation etc), and an irregular program of exhibitions, screenings, performances, workshops, lectures and presentations. In 2010 General Public created an additional studio space for production and residencies. General Public wants to thank the people at Inn.to and the Don King Foundation for their generous support. General Public is a project of DISK – Initiative Bild und Ton e.V. |

MASK: PERFORMANCE VIDEO WORK BY JULIA MAIER(Click image to enlarge)
In her video "Mask" (2012) the artist Julia Maier uses her body to create new images in ways that one doesn't usually associates with bodies. Nylons looking like landscapes, blonde hair looking like spooky movements in the dark. The video "Mask" is a body performance which has no beginning and no ending because it shows a neverending process of beauty. Daily female routines transforming at the same time into horror and beauty.

ESCAPE - INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL (MAY 11TH TO MAY 19TH)(Click image to enlarge)
ESCAPE 2012 is the programmatic title of the International Festival planned and organized by Open Space Berlin and BLO- Ateliers. Escape is a geopolitical phenomenon associated with third world countries, or war zones which often leads to terrible humanitarian crisis on the borders of Europe and beyond. The question of whether or not escaping is possible has also been highlighted by the recent nuclear catastrophe in the highly developed country of Japan. With this mind, this theme has been consciously chosen to serve us as a screen and source of inspiration for an International Art Festival with a focus on performing arts, and cultural exchange between Asian, European, US- and South American artists and the local performance scene in Berlin.
